On Kawara was best known for his date paintings, or the «Today» works. He didn’t paint every day. He painted most days. Banal days. Ordinary days. Everyday days. I wanted to make some date paintings for exceptional days. Romantic days. I chose the wedding day. After some careful research at the National Archives in London, I made a date painting for every time David Michael Clarke got married, from 1969 to 1999.

 

This work was originally commissioned for the exhibition ‘Tant pis pour toi’ at Wharf, Centre d’Art Contemporain de Basse Normandie, 2001. Since then, selected mariages have been shown in the exhibition ‘Non’ at FRAC des Pays de la Loire, Carquefou, and in the exhibition ‘Même Pas’ at the Galerie du Bellay, Rouen. The work was revived in 2014 and exhibited for a final time in its entirety in the exhibition ‘Flying Black Cow Utopia Club’ at the Galerie du Dourven, Trédez-Locquémmeau.
